Community Action Center Successfully Restores Jerusalem Residency Rights

The Community Action Center (CAC) at Al-Quds University has successfully reinstated the Jerusalem residency rights of a Jerusalemite citizen, “A,” after they had been revoked for seven years. The case was handled by the Center’s specialized legal team.

In 2017, the family of “A” approached the Community Action Center at its main office in the Old City of Jerusalem following a decision by the Israeli authorities to revoke his residency. The family sought the Center’s free legal assistance services, which are provided to thousands of Jerusalemites, after the citizen had exhausted several personal attempts over the years to restore his right to reside in Jerusalem.

The Center undertook comprehensive legal follow-up of the case, including the submission of formal requests and continuous monitoring of the file concerning both the citizen and his family. Despite initial rejections based on various justifications, the Center proceeded to file a series of consecutive appeals challenging the decision, in addition to implementing other legal measures over the course of seven years. These sustained efforts ultimately resulted in the acceptance of the case, the reinstatement of “A’s” residency, and the reunification of his family, who had been deprived of this right for many years.

In response, the citizen expressed his deep appreciation to the Center and its legal team for their diligent and persistent efforts in restoring his residency. He also encouraged Jerusalemites facing similar cases to visit the Center at its Old City office – Aqabat Al-Khalidiya – to benefit from the free legal consultations and services provided in matters related to the National Insurance Institute and the Ministry of Interior.

It is worth noting that Al-Quds University established the Community Action Center in 1999 to provide free legal and social services aimed at empowering the Palestinian community in Jerusalem and safeguarding its rights. The Center works to enhance public awareness of civil rights and liberties, thereby contributing to resolving challenges through legal means.

The Community Action Center further seeks to strengthen the role of individuals, academic institutions, and civil society organizations in developing and empowering various sectors of Jerusalemite society in particular, and Palestinian society in general. It strives to improve their ability to access, protect, and organize their social, economic, political, and educational rights, in support of the steadfastness of Jerusalemites in their homeland.
