Welcome

The Al Quds University’s faculty of Public Health generates knowledge and provides students with the key skills to improve public health. We believe that our mission will be fulfilled as theory is translated into decisions and practices that will improve the health and wellbeing of the public.

Whether you want to work with leading researchers, further your studies or enhance your career opportunities, the Faculty of Public Health has something to suit you.

The Faculty of Public Health was founded in 1997, with the aim of promoting and improving the health of Palestinian community. Our mission is to prepare future generations of healthcare professionals who are capable of facing the uncertain world of public health, head on.

Our faculty provides an excellent setting for those who are looking for a career in Public Health. There are currently three graduate programmes of Public Health, Health Policy & Management, and Community Mental Health. We also offer a Bachelors programme in Public Health Nutrition. These are run over two branches, one in Al-Quds University main campus in Jerusalem, and a second in Gaza City.

As a faculty, we are engaged in numerous areas of public health using innovative research and teaching, to inform policies and improve practice.

Our research areas include focus on issues of chronic diseases, risk factors, the health system, policy, and research issues. Focus on the biological, psychological and social aspects of health is also crucial in order to approach health issues effectively in the Palestinian context, with regard to the political and economic instability of the country.

In an ever-changing environment, it is vital that we continuously enhance and develop the quality of research and teaching in all of our programmes, so as to stay relevant to the present and future health needs of Palestine, and beyond. We achieve this by working in partnership with different governments, universities, non-government organisations, the private sector, and others.

We believe that our mission will be fulfilled as knowledge is translated into decisions and practices that will improve the health and wellbeing of the public. We are looking for those who are innovative, and willing to bring new ideas and suggestions that will keep us relevant in this rapidly changing environment of Palestine.

Sincerely,
Motasem Hamdan, Associate Professor of Health Policy and Management

  • Adult learning and enabling approach

Gaza Branch

With the inspiration of contributing to promote the health status of the Palestinian population, in 1997, Al-Quds University launched the School of Public Health (SPH).  The SPH offers master degree programs in health sector in both the West Bank including Jerusalem and Gaza. The SPH operates in both the West Bank and Gaza in a standardized approach; the two sites use the same curricula, same teaching strategies and both are managed by the same deanship.

Programmes: Currently, the SPH in Gaza offers three programs.

  • Master of Public Health Program which includes three tracts; health management tract, epidemiology tract and environmental health tract.
  • Community Mental Health Programme.
  • Health Policy and Management program which has been introduced two years ago as a pilot.

Furthermore, occasionally, the SPH hosts other programs managed by other colleges from Al-Quds University such as the master degree in mother child health nursing, nursing management and paediatric nursing.  For more details about the School offered programs, please visit the SPH website.

Target group

The main targeted candidates for the program in Gaza are professionals who already work in the health and health related sectors and/or those who plan to work in this domain in the future. In other words, program participants include health care providers, regulators, and managers from different disciplines including doctors, nurses, paramedical, pharmacists, administrators and other health related professions.

Partnerships and collaborations

The SPH in Gaza closely coordinates with relevant stakeholders in Gaza such as MOH, UNRWA, NGOs and other related bodies. Coordination with these organizations involves enrolling candidates from these organizations, conducting joint research projects, conducting capacity building activities and using health facilities at these organizations as laboratory sites for testing some new approaches especially during the residency, quality improvement and applied research courses. It is noticed that most of the students enrolled at the SPH or the graduates of the college, occupy important senior managerial positions at health facilities and international organizations such as WHO, UNICEF, UNRWA and many others.  Currently, most of the health directors at UNRWA, MOH and NGOs premises in Gaza are graduates of the SPH.

The SPH staff’s members in Gaza intensively participate in community development related activities.  Their contributions to strategies development, research activities, managing NGOs, capacity building and organizing conferences are remarkable.

Setting and possibilities

The SPH implements its program in a well-equipped, two-level building located in Barcelona Str. Tal El-Hawa area, Gaza City. It has a library, educational resources, a computer laboratory, research infrastructure, adequate access to local and international resources, and also, students have access to other resources within Al-Quds University including the electronic library which is connected to reputable electronic libraries of other press agencies and universities. In addition, the SPH in Gaza utilizes the learning resources available at other educational institutions.

Staff

Currently, 13 staff members are working as full timers at the SPH in Gaza, in addition to 75 academics serve as part timers.

Students

The annual student intake in the graduate progarmmes is about 40 students. During the period 1997 through 2014, 388 students had been graduated from the SPH different graduate  programs.  In addition to that, 74 students have graduated from the upgrading programs in the Bachelors of Public Health. This programme is not active at the moment.
