Urgent Appeal

You can make a profound difference in the educational life of young people in Palestine.

Al-Quds University, the only Arab university in Jerusalem, provides higher education and community services within the Jerusalem area and to the neighboring towns, villages and refugee camps. It symbolizes the heroic efforts of the Palestinian people to build their own civil society and institutions under challenging conditions.

It has ten academic faculties on four campuses: Arts, Science and Technology, Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Law, Qur'an and Islamic Studies, Health Professions, Engineering, and Jurisprudence. These faculties accommodate more than six thousand students from the Jerusalem area and from the districts of Bethlehem, Hebron, Jenin, Jericho, Nablus, Ramallah and Tulkarim. While classes are under repeated threat of disruption by Israeli occupation practices, the university continues to deliver educational services and engage students in positive learning experiences, so that they may envision and hope for a better future.

The university faces a major, unprecedented financial and operational crisis brought about by the dire economic and social situation presently prevailing in Palestine. Steady subsidies are not available, and the university is unable to charge its students full tuition fees commensurate with real costs. Recent contributions from Arab governments alleviated the crisis somewhat, enabling the university to pay a portion of the salaries of its 723 support staff employees and faculty members. This temporary, one-time assistance made it possible to re-start the present academic year.

However, Al-Quds University remains in arrears and now faces more difficulties in the coming months. It has no recourse but to appeal to more sources and additional help from all those who are keen to support Palestinian education.

For its sustainability, the university needs the continuity and stability that only constant and varied sources of incoming contributions can provide.

That means that now, only through your help in whatever way, through any contribution on your part, will Al-Quds University sustain and improve its potential in continuing and developing its vital services during a very challenging period.

Take a moment and consider what form of contribution you can make. Even a token form of assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Do you wish to support needy students who are in danger of dropping out because they are unable to pay the moderate fees?

  • Do you want to enable the purchase of some lab equipment or computers to strengthen technical infrastructure in the faculties of Dentistry, Pharmacology, Science or other programs?

  • Would you like your contribution to go to the Human Development Fund (scholarships to students and faculty to earn higher degrees; research projects)?

  • Would you prefer to support the library by offering a standard reference work or subscription to a journal?

  • Would you consider sponsoring an academic program now in planning, or a research institute, or the appointment of a Professorial Chair that will bring additional experts to the university?

  • Do you want to be associated with a specific building project, infrastructure improvement, or renovation?

We extend our appreciation and gratitude to all who will join in this educational campaign.
