Dentistry

History

Since it was established; Al-Quds University, has dedicated all its facilities and manpower to energize higher education in Palestine, and remain the leading Arabic educational institute in Jerusalem. Al-Quds University accepted the responsibility of educating the whole Palestinian person scientifically, socially, intellectually, and spiritually providing the kind of higher education that will empower individuals to lead, change and stand tall in front of our country challenges. Urging from this belief, Al-Quds University established the Faculty of Dentistry and set it working in October 2000, when the call for the establishment of a dental medicine school came loud and urgent. It became a necessity in order to enable the provision of such service to the country under very difficult prevailing times, and afford facilities of competing standards to its students instead of pursuing their education abroad.

The Faculty of Dentistry was born with great potential to grow and lead the dental and oral health care in Palestine. Our faculty has become a competing dental education institute in the region. It has been a policy to adapt, create and bring together more talents and resources into the faculty. Today, more than fifty percent of the working staff have been on  scholar ships awarded by the University, and the policy continues by embracing many of its graduated students sending them for higher specialty programs. In year 2000 our facilities were able to teach and train 25 dental students. Our ability today has grown to be able to accommodate more than 80 students per year.

The purpose for founding a Faculty of Dentistry at Al-Quds University is not limited to establishing a learning and training center able to graduate dentists with high qualifications and excellent professional levels, but also includes the establishment of an advanced specialized services center that will provide facilitated health and consultation services to a large sector of people who reside in Palestine, taking into account that such services are still not available in the country.

Al-Quds University also aims at establishing a Faculty of Dentistry that will become a research centre in dental surgery and the University will thereby contribute in filling the lack of such a centre. The University will also bring in faculty members and researchers with high qualifications from inside and outside Palestine. The University has sent a number of distinct dentists to obtain higher qualifications in the required programs, and these scholarships will continue until the needs of the Faculty of Dentistry are fulfilled.

The faculty of dentistry awards a Bachelor degree in dental surgery, after successfully completing no less than five academic years. Students are accepted in the dental program after passing the secondary school certificate (Tawjihi certificate), science stream, or its equivalent with a minimum average of 90%. Students also undergo personal interviews to evaluate personality aspects and appropriateness. The teaching language at the faculty of dentistry is the English language, accepted students are ensured to be fluent and skillful in both written and spoken English. Transfers from other faculties or other universities to the faculty of dentistry, Al-Quds University, is only allowed after ensuring the previous conditions in addition to achieving a cumulative average at the former school of minimum of 85%.

One of the most important goals of our dental school is to improve the oral health status in our community, and alleviate the burden of oral diseases of the Palestinian children. Teaching students how to be a good dental public health worker in the future besides being a skillful dentist is one way the faculty targeting the public. Training on how to plan a community projects to serve the needy population and offer solutions for a public health problem is an eye opening experience for them. Reaching out directly to the local and regional community with effective treatments, and carrying out active well proven preventive measures is another way. The faculty works extensively on regular basis to arrange community work programs.

Our dream is big, the resources are limited but we work so hard to bridge this gap at Al Quds University, Dental School.
