INSAN Center for Women and Gender Studies

Introduction:

Women and Gender studies are thought of as an academic field on their own and, at the same time, are connected with many different academic sciences such as: sociology, humanities, and natural sciences.  At another level, decision makers and strategic policies give considerable attention to gender when formulating strategic and developmental plans for the state. Due to this, the integration of gender studies and academic research has become an urgent priority.

Therefore, many universities in the world have given grants specializing in Women and Gender studies.  Specialized academic and research departments were established. Moreover, a number of curriculums were upgraded for freshman university students and students of higher studies to close the gap and give forth specialized and professional leaders. At the national level, it has become necessary to provide academic programs in local universities which grant academic degrees in Gender and Women Studies.

The INSAN Center for Gender Studies was established at Al-Quds University in the year 1998. The center began its work in February 1999.  As a university department it provides academic and research programs in social discrimination between the two genders. As one of Al-Quds University's centers, it follows university policies, philosophies, and rules, and has the freedom to design its programs and projects considering the university financial rules and policies.

It was named INSAN center in which the word "INSAN" means the man and woman. In addition, gender refers to the perspective the society sees people as women and men and the expected roles and responsibilities that each man and woman carry out in society.

The center programs and work plan are directed by a committee of 7 members from the different university faculties and departments. It also has a consultant council that includes a selection of the eminent people from in and outside the university.  The  academic staff consists of 4 employees with various specializations.
